Race and Social Justice
Embracing Race and Social Justice: Our Commitment to an Inclusive Curriculum
At Beam County Primary School, we believe nurturing a diverse, equitable, and inclusive school environment is foundational to educational excellence and every pupil's personal growth. Our commitment to Race and Social Justice is embedded within our curriculum, reflecting our dedication to providing a well-rounded, meaningful education for all. We recognise that an inclusive curriculum empowers students to develop respect, empathy, and awareness of the world, preparing them to become active, responsible citizens in a diverse society.
Why Race and Social Justice Matter in Education
Including Race and Social Justice in our curriculum isn't simply about teaching history or acknowledging current events. It's about creating a school culture that values every child's identity, challenges inequality, and promotes a sense of belonging for all. Research consistently shows that students who feel represented and respected in their learning environments perform better academically and socially. Our approach fosters a school community where everyone feels valued and pupils are encouraged to critically engage with the world.
As our nation grows more diverse, there has never been a better opportunity for us to learn to live respectfully together and benefit from one another's wisdom and experiences.
Beam County Primary School is proud to participate in Barking and Dagenham's Race and Social Justice Initiative. As a school, we were one of the founding members of this initiative, and we also worked with Newham's E4C (Education 4 Change) initiative.
Agreeing to fulfil the aims of the Race and Social Justice Charter means that we will make continual and intentional efforts to ensure that every member of our school community feels valued and appreciated.
We are fortunate to be part of a diverse and vibrant school. Therefore, our racial diversity must be celebrated in ways that bring about holistic benefits for everyone in our school community, producing long-lasting change and opening the door to endless possibilities!

International Day at Beam 2024
This year, our school came alive with the colours, sounds, and flavours of International Day! Pupils proudly celebrated their diverse cultures, dressing in traditional attire and sharing their heritage with peers. Parents contributed by delivering exciting workshops that offered insights into their cultural practices, from music and dance to arts and crafts and storytelling.
After school, the festivities continued as pupils and their families gathered to share food from all around the world. Our playground was transformed into a vibrant marketplace where students and their families enjoyed dishes from different countries, listened to live music, and engaged in conversations about the rich tapestry of traditions represented in our school community.
Thank you to everyone who participated and made this day unforgettable. International Day was a wonderful reminder of the beauty in our diversity and the strength in our unity!
Dr Leema Jabbar- Power of Hair Workshop with the Ideas Foundation & Pantene
Our Year 2 pupils recently enjoyed a unique learning experience in the "Power of Hair" workshop with author Dr. Lemar Jabbar. Through the engaging theme, "Hair - Taking a Closer Look," students explored the importance of hair and gained an appreciation for its diversity and beauty.
The workshop encouraged children to feel optimistic about their hair and understand the important roles that hair plays on our bodies. Dr. Jabbar shared fun and interactive lessons that celebrated the many textures, colours, and styles of hair, promoting a message of self-acceptance and pride.
This inspiring session helped our pupils embrace and celebrate their own hair while also appreciating the rich variety of hair in our school community. Thank you, Dr. Jabbar, for a memorable and empowering experience!
