Pupil Leadership
At Beam County Primary School, we take pride in providing a nurturing environment where children can learn, develop, and thrive. When pupils reach Year 6, they are encouraged to actively participate in school life by engaging with our pupil leadership structures and processes.
Fundamental structures are our House Captains, Vice Captains, and Pupil Parliament.
Electing our House and Vice Captain, teaching our children about democracy
We hold annual elections for our school’s pupil leadership team in autumn. Children in Year 6 write a letter of application detailing why they believe they are suitable candidates for the role. As a school leadership team, we review the applications to produce a shortlist. All shortlisted candidates are children who consistently demonstrate that they are excellent role models for their peers and already show leadership qualities at school.
Short-listed children present their manifestos to all Key Stage 2 children (Years 3 to 6), who then vote for their favourite candidate.

Eco committee
We gather at least once every half-term to discuss ways to enhance our school environment and decrease our carbon footprint. Our goal is to achieve the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award.
Digital leaders
Meet Our Tech-Savvy Digital Leaders!
Our outstanding Digital Leaders Program empowers students in Year 5 to become tech experts and take an active role in the school's digital life! These responsible and enthusiastic students go above and beyond the classroom to:
Support Teachers: They assist with staff training (CPD) on using new technology in the classroom, making learning even more engaging.
Keep Us Informed: They use their creativity to update the main reception area's digital signage, informing parents about upcoming events and school news.
Tech Wizards: They ensure our Chromebooks run smoothly with the latest updates.
BeamTV Broadcasting: They create educational and entertaining programs for BeamTV, keeping the lunch break fun and informative for all students.
Beyond the School Walls:
The achievements of our Digital Leaders extend beyond our school! They have:
- Completed specialist training at Apple Lakeside, honing their technological skills.
- Showcased their expertise by creating a video for a special event attended by Headteachers and the Computing Lead.
- Soon, they will be taking their leadership to the global stage! They will be hosting international visitors and running training sessions as part of their school visit.
We are incredibly proud of our Digital Leaders and their dedication to promoting technology in a positive and impactful way!
Sports Leaders
At Beam, we have Sports Leaders as part of our PE provision, who meet termly to discuss any ideas regarding physical education. Sports leaders have an opportunity to share their own thoughts and opinions with the group and collectively agree on any decisions that are made.
Sports Leaders are trained at the beginning of the year to lead activities and games and are taught the important qualities that are needed for successful leadership. Sports Leaders work across Key Stage 1 and 2 during breaks and lunchtimes each week to lead games and ensure playtimes are inclusive for everyone and that no child is left alone with no one to play with. This role develops important values such a patience, friendship, compassion and kindness as well as building their confidence and communication skills throughout the year.
Sports Leaders also help to organise and support events such as Sports Day.
Wellbeing Champions
The Wellbeing Champions at our school support pupils in being emotionally healthy and improving their well-being. They have delivered assemblies for the whole school and continue to be proactive throughout the day, supporting pupils as and when needed. They are nominated by their class peers and assist with checking the well-being charts throughout the day.
They are also looking to establish a ‘Wellbeing’ club at lunchtime.
Reading Ambassadors
Reading Ambassador from each class is selected once per half-term to choose a book to keep from our Book Vending Machine. These children demonstrate a passion, excellent attitude and regularity for reading; they help promote reading in class and across the school.
Sports Council
We recently introduced a School Sports Council for years 3-6 at Beam, which meets every two weeks. The children represent the voice of their class/year group and share ideas about PE and our extracurricular sports offer. They will shape the future design of our extracurricular timetable and an inter-house competition in 2024-2025.
